Hamilton Explains Brazil Race

In the last race of the season at the Interlagos circuit in Brazil, Hamilton was forced to retire with gear box problems and had to settle with 5^th in the Drivers’ world championship. He started the race with the remote possibility of climbing above both Mark Webber and Fernando Alonso, and was hoping to finish the season with back to back wins, but was foiled as his gearbox eventually gave out after having problems for a few laps.

The 2008 champion didn’t start brilliantly, and dropped from 4^th on the grid to 5^th, explaining “At the start I wanted to avoid any aggro, and that meant I lost a position to Fernando. After that I had reasonably decent pace, and I was able to stay close to Fernando and Jenson until I encountered a gearbox problem.” The gear box problem initially only caused problems in first and second gears, and Hamilton coped with the impediment well, losing some ground on his rivals, but not dropping positions. However, the problem got worse and finally the gears gave out, ending Hamilton’s race. “The problem meant I stopped being able to make good, clean gearshifts. Then I lost seventh, and then the whole thing just let go,” said Lewis.

The young English driver has suffered a disappointing season, plagued by retirements, mistakes and the repeated clashes with Ferrari’s Felipe Massa. Lewis’ form seemed to be improving though, when he took his third win of the season in Abu Dhabi, after Vettel spun off in the first corner with a puncture. The race and subsequent retirement will have been irritating to Hamilton, but he seems optimistic for the year ahead, commenting “of course, it’s not the way I’d like to have ended the season, but it wasn’t so bad.” He will be hoping to finish far higher next year, with more experience under his belt and perhaps a measure of caution to temper his infamously aggressive driving style after such a controversial season.
